For dogs with kidney Disease we usually recommend lowering the amount of protein from 80% down to 60%. So a kidney diet would have a ratio of 60/40 and in later stages of disease perhaps a 50/50 diet (animal product to veggies). We do not recommend drastically reducing protein until the final stage of disease. We suggest focusing on low-oxalate veggies and zucchini and squash make good choices. Whey Protein is a low-phosphorus protein source and can be used to replace some of the meat in a diet as the disease progresses. We provide some diet suggestions in our article How to Feed Your Dog. Shine Pet Foods also provides a raw diet for dogs with kidney disease. We provide an educational video on Kidney Disease in Dogs so you can learn more about this pet health condition.
