Primarily veterinary medicine addresses an animal's symptoms with medications. However, there are many potential causes of seizures that can be researched to see if they apply to your dog. Conditions that can cause seizures in dogs include low blood sugar, kidney and liver disease, low calcium, hypothyroidism and electrolyte imbalances. You can also consider an MRI to get a picture of your dog's brain to potentially see what may be causing seizures. Toxins are a common cause of seizures and consider any toxins that may potentially be in his environment or water. Flea and tick pesticide medications and collars contain powerful neurotoxins and a common side effect of the use of these products is seizures so they should be avoided. Vaccinations, such as the rabies vaccine, can have neurological side effects so your dog is a candidate for medical exclusion from his rabies vaccinations and should avoid unnecessary vaccinations. Other than that a healthy, whole food diet and supplementation will be helpful and we offer some suggestions in our article How to Feed Your Dog.
