Adjustments to certain medications may be necessary when using systemic enzymes. Enzymes used systemically provide fibrinolytic activity that helps support cardiovascular health. This activity will help to support healthy blood pressure and clotting activity. Because of this blood pressure and blood thinning medications may have to be adjusted lower working with your health care provider. They can also support healthy immune system function and this may allow adjustment to medications used for autoimmune conditions after a certain time again working with your health care provider. Another issue to be aware of is that systemic enzymes can dissolve the coating on extended release medications or supplements more quickly, so you should allow for two hours between the use of medications and systemic enzymes. The proteases in these enzymes will also breakdown certain substances more quickly, so the two hour rule applies to food, medications and supplements for that reason as well and is why they are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach. These concerns don't apply to digestive enzymes that are taken with meals as these enzymes will be used up digesting food.
