Does silver disrupt the gut microbiome when given orally to cats?
Sovereign Silver Hydrosol for Pets
Hello, thank you for answering my question and giving advice as to how to help heal our kitty's ear infection. I was told by a holistic vet that giving our cat silver internally will disrupt the microbiome in her gut. Do you agree with this? I have an amazing silver (nano silver by Avini Health) that we use at home for ourselves and I was assured by 4 different professionals that it does not disrupt the microbiome so I decided to try giving our kitty a teaspoon once a day as long as her body asked for it. She has been responding very well but I did notice today that she has loose stool. She hasn't eaten anything different then usual. Her whole life she has eaten a raw diet I make at home that was created by a veterinarian and also another raw cat food that I order to give her a little variety. I also rinse her ear twice a day with warm water to keep it clean as it still has some discharge from the infection.
Is the silver that is carried on your site created differently for animals and perhaps a better silver to use for her?
I love the idea of putting a probiotic in her ear, hopefully helping it become balanced again (it is slightly irritated right now, perhaps I should use something more soothing then warm water).
Thank you so much, Jessica :)

I feel that Sovereign Silver is the premier product on the market so I would use this in the future. It has a smaller particle size (.8 nm vs 7-10 nm in the Avini®) and is positively charged which will make it much more effective than other silver products. I wouldn't use warm water in your cat's ear as the water will help create a breeding ground for pathogenic bacteria and yeast. Using the silver in your cat's ears would be much better. To answer your question about the disruption to the microbiome research is mixed. My view is that the smaller particle size of the Sovereign Silver is safer. Silver is an antimicrobial and it can definitely kill bacteria as we have used it when bad food is ingested to kill the bad bacteria. However, I don't feel that the Sovereign Silver will leave the stomach to damage the ecology of the digestive tract as the small particle size will be quickly absorbed by tissue. However, other silver products with larger particle sizes can certainly enter the digestive tract. Whenever we have used silver internally we have always also used a probiotic (away from the silver). I feel that the loose stool can potentially be caused by the larger particle size of the Avini® Silver, but more likely too much silver or prolonged use can cause irritation to the digestive tract and this can be your cat's issue. Though, just to mention, we have never had that issue with Sovereign Silver even after taking it internally for Lyme Disease for six months.
