Alfalfa is a wonderful herb that provides an array of important nutrients and that is why it is often used in supplements like our Vitality Blend. Alfalfa does contain phytoestrogens that are plant-based compounds that mimic the effects of estrogen in the body. However, when taken in healthy amounts these phytoestrogens can actually help to balance hormones in male and female dogs and cats. This occurs because phytoestrogens can attach to estrogen receptors in the body to block more powerful estrogens and this can be a good thing. However, in a dog with an estrogen deficiency perhaps this can cause an issue. Keep in mind though that a dog or cat would have to ingest a rather large amount of alfalfa leaf daily for any disruption to the endocrine system. Since alfalfa is only one part of twelve herbs in our Vitality Blend formula and the serving size recommended for dogs and cats is quite small this is not a concern for animals, like your dog, using this supplement.
