Iodine is a micronutrient that is an essential mineral the body needs in small amounts to function properly. There are approximately 350 micrograms of iodine in a ten gram serving (30+ capsules) of either the F2 Core and F3 Forte Biopreparation formulas. A general RDA of iodine for dogs is 30 micrograms per kilogram (2.2 lbs) of body weight. For your dog that would be approximately 1,200 micrograms of iodine daily (30 mcg x 40 lbs). The serving of Biopreparation that you give your dog provides less than 35 micrograms daily. You can see from the math that the amount of iodine in Biopreparation is absolutely safe & satisfactory for a natural, whole food supplement and most likely not the issue contributing to your dog's elevated T4. Please check your dog's diet for high sources of iodine (that you may not even be aware of) such as seaweed, seafood (like fish, shellfish, and prawns), dairy products, iodized salt (a hidden ingredient in many pet foods), and eggs. Other causes of high T4 include thyroiditis (inflammation of the thyroid gland), thyroid nodules (non-cancerous growths), high levels of estrogen and, hopefully not the case with your dog, the most common cause of hyperthyroidism in dogs is a thyroid tumor that produces excessive thyroid hormones.
