While we understand the desire for natural alternatives, we don't believe there's anything that offers the same reliable protection as heartworm medications. We typically recommend regular Heartgard®, though it has been phased out for Heartgard Plus®, which includes additional worming agents. We generally advise against administering worming medications routinely when your dog doesn't have worms or parasites. However, if you're looking to avoid extra chemicals, you can source ivermectin, the primary active ingredient in heartworm medications, along with dosage instructions online. Please be cautious of the sensitivities certain herding breeds have to this medication. Using ivermectin alone may help you steer clear of additional chemicals found in current heartworm treatments. For more insights, you can refer to our article Heartworm Facts that offers valuable information on heartworm life cycle and prevention.
