What are Essential Oils?
An essential oil is a highly-concentrated liquid that is distilled from the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots, or other elements of a plant. This natural oil has the characteristic fragrance of the plant or other source from which it is extracted along with its unique healing attributes.
Why Can Essential Oils be Dangerous for Cats?
People can detoxify and eliminate the aromatic constituents found in essentail oils. However, cats are known to be deficient in their ability to eliminate compounds through hepatic glucuronidation (they lack the enzyme glucuronyl tranferases). Glucuronidation is an important detoxification mechanism present in most animals except cats. Lack of this important detoxification mechanism in cats may result in slower elimination and the build up of toxic metabolites in the body causing toxicity problems and liver damage.
Most people are aware of the dangers of topical and oral administration of essential oils, but they are generally unaware that inhalation of essential oils can also be unsafe for your cat. Precautions should be used when diffusing essential oils or using them around the home, since the aromatic constituents will be absorbed into the blood from the lungs and can lead to the same toxicity issues as topical use.
It is believed that some oils are worse than others, especially those high in phenols like peppermint, clove, cinnamon and thyme; and high in monoterpene hydrocarbons like citrus oils. We recommend steering clear of all essentail oils around cats unless you are very experienced in their use.
