About Nature's Herbs for Pets
Dr. Victor Tse is a 6th generation Traditional Chinese Medical Doctor. His Grandfather, recognizing his interest in animals, passed down to him a number of his personal formulas. After emigrating to Canada in 1988, Dr. Tse spent 6 years adjusting the formulas so that Pets could be treated generically, without the need for a personal examination. The result was his production of a range of effective Chinese herbal remedies which can be used without any knowledge of Chinese Medicine.

When using herbal remedies for dogs please be mindful of a few things:

  • Begin only one remedy or medication at a time. Look for a response or any indications of intolerance.
  • Holistic or natural remedies work best when the entire individual is taken into account. This means that your companion should be provided with the healthiest whole food nutrition possible along with digestive enzymes, probiotics, essential fatty acids, a high quality vitamin/mineral supplement - again, preferably from whole food sources, a calm stress-free environment and exercise. This will give your companion what he needs physically and emotionally to assist his immune system in the healing process. Remember, this is not western medicine where we are trying to suppress symptoms alone. What we are trying to do with holistic care using herbal remedies is to provide the body with what it needs to heal itself. Like conventional medicine herbs alone will not address the underlying causes of a chronic problem.
  • We are all eager to see immediate results, but that is not how herbal remedies work. It takes time for herbs to build in the system, and it may take several days or longer to see the effectiveness of a particular remedy. The difference between a successful herbal therapy and, for example, resorting to a steroid treatment, often amounts to a day or two of patient waiting. The severity of the condition and overall health of the animal will also play a role.
  • Depending on an individual's response, suggested dosages may need to be adjusted. If signs of intolerance are seen, such as vomiting, diarrhea or extreme lethargy the remedy should be stopped for a couple of days. After this pause, you may try again with 1/2 the original dosage to see if a lower dose may be tolerated. The opposite may also be true, where an animal is not responding to the recommended dosage, and in this case a VERY gradual increase in 10% increments up to 50% above the suggested dosage may be tried to see if any improvements are seen. The guidance of a good holistic veterinarian with knowledge of the herbs being used may be helpful at this time. It is much more effective to dose your companion with herbs two or three times per day rather that in one large dose.
  • The duration of an herbal therapy varies by animal and in relation to the disease you are confronting. A recommended course of action is to take two days off from the herbal therapy every week - five days on, two days off. This will help alleviate any tolerance or toxicity issues that may develop long term and also help you to monitor the animal's response to the herbs. After more than seven days on the maximum dosage, if no results are seen, it may be time to try another herb or holistic remedy or consult with a holistic veterinarian.
  • If your companion is currently on any conventional medications it may be a good idea to check with a knowledgeable veterinarian to see if there may be any interactions.
