Orijen Dog Food is manufactured by Champion Petfoods located in Alberta, Canada. Unlike other pet food companies, that can often more resemble marketing companies, Champion Petfoods stands apart as a family-owned and operated producer of Orijen Dog Food with a 25 year tradition of quality.
As a “boutique” producer Champion Petfoods makes Orijen Dog Food without commodity grains or previously frozen chicken ingredients that arrive from low-cost overseas countries. Instead, they focus on world-class “fit for human consumption” ingredients raised or fished within their region by people they know and trust, and that are delivered to their door FRESH each day!
Mother Nature forms the foundation of all Orijen Dog Food formulations. The fact is that dogs and cats are evolved as carnivores and despite a modern lifestyle their anatomy remains unchanged. That is why Champion Petfoods formulates Orijen Dog Food with a Biologically Appropriate formulation to nourish dogs and cats in keeping with their evolutionary and anatomical adaptation to protein-rich diets that include a broad variety of fresh meats.
Meat-concentrated diets are higher in protein and lower in carbohydrates making them far better matched to support the carnivorous anatomy of our companion canines. From fresh free-run chicken and fresh whole eggs to pacific salmon, wild-caught flounder and fresh Northern walleye, all Orijen Dog Food recipes match the meat-eating anatomy of dogs and cats by providing much higher meat inclusions (75-80%) than conventional pet foods (25-40%). These rich and varied meat ingredients produce a Biologically Appropriate protein level of 38% or greater, which reflects the natural diet.
There are five natural principles that guide the formulation of all varieties of Orijen Dog Food.
- Ingredient freshness and variety to match the natural diet
Providing a wider variety of animal ingredients better matches the natural diet, providing our companion pets with a diversity of essential proteins and fats to match the natural diet. Although the natural diet of dogs and cats contains a VARIETY of meat proteins from small mammals, eggs, birds and fish, most commercial pet foods contain only one animal ingredient such as chicken or lamb.
From Dachshunds to Great Danes, all breeds of dogs carry the same DNA patterns and share a single evolutionary origin—the gray wolf. And just like their wild cousins, dogs and cats are carnivores—equipped with sharp teeth, a short digestive tract and a body that’s highly efficient at metabolizing animal proteins and fats – not carbohydrates.
- Low in grains and carbohydrates
Dogs and cats are anatomically adapted for a diet high in animal proteins and fats with very few, if any, carbohydrates. While most pet foods contain 40-60% carbohydrates, Orijen diets contain 18-22% carbohydrates—about half of other commercial pet foods.
- Rich in fruits and vegetables
Instead of inappropriate high-glycemic grains such as white rice and corn, Orijen is formulated with a minimum of 20% fruits and vegetables rich in naturally occurring vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients.
- Tonic herbs to strengthen the body and spirit
Botanicals help eliminate toxins from the body and serve as tonics to strengthen organs, glands and tissues in specific parts of the body—like strengthening the heart or aiding digestion.
