Our Natural Urinary Tract Infection Protocol
From our experience there is no single miracle cure for a particular disease state. That is why we use a variety of supplements that all have different effects on the body to produce resolution of the imbalance. The important thing here is that they are TRULY all-natural, whole food nutrients that require little energy by the body to utilize, provide a big nutritional punch and have no scary side-effects! This is especially true when dealing with sometimes hard to alleviate conditions.
Recommendation #1 - Disinfect the Urinary Tract
Urinary tract infections are usually caused by the E. coli bacteria and result in discomfort and difficulty urinating. UTI infections can be serious if they reach the kidneys so we want to catch them early and keep them from reoccurring. The natural approach appears to be best as there is growing concern that antibiotic therapy can actually promote recurring infections. What we want to do here is disinfect the urinary tract while providing soothing herbs to reduce inflammation and discomfort.

Recommendation #2 - Soothe and Cleanse the Urinary Tract
Our UTI Formula above contains Uva ursi, which is a strong astringent. It should only be used for 3-5 days at a time. After that time, to make sure the infection is cleared, it is usually beneficial to continue on a gentler formula for the next two weeks or so until you are sure the infection is gone. This next formula is soothing and healing and has milder antiseptic qualities and is just what you need for longer therapy.

Recommendation #3 - Provide Beneficial Flora to the Urinary Tract
Probiotics inhabit the mucous membranes that line the urinary tract. When their numbers are reduced by antibiotic usage or for some other reason, infection can more easily occur. Bacteria that cause urinary tract infections, generally E. coli, primarily ascend through the urethra. It is very unlikely to be able to repopulate the probiotic colonies in this region of the body by ingesting a probiotic supplement. So they too have to travel up the urethra to repopulate this region. We have had great success treating urinary tract infections and preventing new ones with this next product recommendation.

Recommendation #4 - Improve Digestion with Plant Enzymes and Probiotics
Digestion is a key factor to the health and longevity of our dogs and cats, so including an enzyme and probiotic supplement is very important. Providing enzymes helps to quickly and completely break down your animals food so they get all the nutrients they can out of their meals. Studies have shown that animals fed a processed pet food diet have pancreases four times the normal size. As the pancreas gets burned out, this leads to fewer and fewer enzymes being secreted by the body as your pet ages. In addition, incompletely broken down proteins can make their way into the blood stream causing many of the inflammatory conditions we see in our animals today like arthritis. Probiotics also play a role in proper digestion, but also a large part in the efficiency of the immune system and keeping the digestive tract balanced and healthy.

Recommendation #5 - Acidify the Gut for Optimum Digestion
Many animals we see are having problems with hypochloridia, or low stomach acid output. Feeding a kibble diet raises the alkalinity of your pet's stomach resulting in incomplete digestion, but your dog or cat can have trouble digesting other foods as well. By acidifying the digestive tract we not only aid digestion but we help alkalize the body which recent research indicates can aid in the elimination and prevention of urinary tract infections. In order to acidify the gut many people use apple cider vinegar. We prefer our Probiotic Digestive Tonic for this purpose because it is rich in lactic acid that creates an optimal environment for digestion as opposed to acetic acid in apple cider vinegar.

Recommendation #6 - Provide Whole Food Nutrients and Antioxidants
An animal that is struggling with an illness needs all the nutrition they can get so the body can heal and the immune system can function properly. In addition, tissue damage and inflammation that occurs with UTIs produce free radicals. These particles are a primary cause of premature aging, disease and cellular DNA damage. So, we want to provide your animal with high quality antioxidants to neutralize these free radicals and plenty of whole food nutrition for healing and tissue repair. Nutrients from whole foods are more readily absorbed by your dog or cat's body and don't place additional stress on the liver and kidneys as do synthetic vitamins and minerals.

Recommendation #7 - Provide a Healthy Diet
Diet plays an important role in your animal's long term health. Feeding a raw whole food diet is the biologically appropriate way to feed an animal. If you do not want to feed raw, or can't for some reason, then sticking as close to whole food as possible is always best. Kibble pet foods are drying and pets that have urinary tract issues would benefit enormously from a raw food diet or high quality dehydrated (NOT freeze-dried) or wet home prepared diet.
*Please make sure your dog or cat gets plenty of water when suffering with urinary tract issues. As we alluded to previously, animals get the majority of their moisture from the food they eat, especially cats. Feeding a dry kibble diet places a lot of stress on an already imbalanced system and will be very problematic long term - trust us we see the damage done all too frequently. Strongly consider a raw food diet for these animals.
