Our Natural Joint Support Protocol
Recommendation #1 - Provide Nutrients to Rebuild Cartilage
Our primary focus with joint support involves providing nutrients to the cartilage, which is the shock absorber within the joint capsule. This is done to maintain the integrity of the cartilage, and thereby the health of the bone and joint tissue, and to help repair wear and tear that occurs due to overuse or injury.

Recommendation #2 - Reduce Inflammation
As a consequence of joint cartilage wear and tear, friction is created in the joint that results in inflammation. Inflammation not only causes pain and discomfort but also results in the formation of free radicals that further damage tissue and a host of other issues throughout the body.

Recommendation #3 - Provide Whole Food Nutrients and Antioxidants
As we mentioned in #2 above, free radicals that can further damage joint cartilage are formed as a result of inflammation. In addition, these particles are also a primary cause of premature aging and disease. So, we want to provide your animal with high quality antioxidants to neutralize these free radicals to not only fight tissue damage at the joint but also throughout your dog or cat's entire body.

Recommendation #4 - Improve Digestion with Plant Enzymes and Probiotics
Digestion is a key factor to the health and longevity of our dogs and cats, so including an enzyme and probiotic supplement is very important. Providing enzymes helps to quickly and completely break down your animals food so they get all the nutrients they can out of their meals. Studies have shown that animals fed a processed pet food diet have pancreases four times the normal size. As the pancreas gets burned out, this leads to fewer and fewer enzymes being secreted by the body as your pet ages. In addition, incompletely broken down proteins can make their way into the blood stream causing many of the inflammatory conditions we see in our animals today like arthritis. Probiotics also play a role in proper digestion, but also a large part in the efficiency of the immune system and keeping the digestive tract balanced and healthy.

Recommendation #5 - Acidify the Gut for Optimum Digestion
Many animals we see are having problems with hypochloridia, or low stomach acid output. Feeding a kibble diet raises the alkalinity of your pet's stomach resulting in incomplete digestion, but dogs and cats can have problems properly digesting other foods as well. This contributes to many inflammatory issues in the body sush as irritable bowel issues, arthritis and allergies. In order to acidify the gut many people use apple cider vinegar. We prefer our Probiotic Digestive Tonic for this purpose because it is rich in lactic acid that creates an optimal environment for digestion as opposed to acetic acid in apple cider vinegar.

Recommendation #6 - Supplement with Omega 3 Fatty Acids
Inflammation causes pain and also leads to the creation of free radicals as mentioned earlier. Another way to counter this inflammation in your pet's body is with omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3's are anti-inflammatory as opposed to inflammatory omega 6's and 9's found in grains and factory farmed meat (used in most pet food). Fish oil is a good source of EPA & DHA omega 3 fatty acids, but it is important to choose your supplement wisely. Fish oil can be contaminated because of our oceans, so you should purchase a well known and highly respected brand, not just any brand for this particular item. Nordic Naturals produces the finest fish oil in its natural triglyceride form, which studies have shown is the preferred form of fish oil.

Recommendation #7 - Provide Additional Pain Relief
If pain continues to be a problem either chronically or there are some bad days that occur with weather change or over-activity your dog or cat may benefit from some further help. There are certain herbs that provide additional anti-inflammatory and pain relieving results that may help to keep your pet away from more dangerous NSAIDs that have lots of potential side effects.

Recommendation #8 - Provide a Healthy Diet
Diet plays an important role in your animal's long term health. Feeding a raw whole food diet is the biologically appropriate way to feed an animal. If you do not want to feed raw, or can't for some reason, then sticking as close to whole food as possible is always best. An animal that suffers with joint disease can really benefit from all the natural nutrition found in whole foods like ligaments and tendons rich in chondroitin, collagen and other nutrients.

Don't Forget Weight Control and Exercise!
Excess weight puts extra strain on already deteriorating joints and can cause an increase in discomfort, a reduction in activity and acceleration in the disease process. Gentle exercise will benefit by helping with: weight maintenance, maintaining muscular integrity around the joint, stabilizing the joint and improving and maintaining overall conditioning.
